As is often the case at major international summits, not everything can be predicted. And if the Beijing summit ended with historic diplomatic significance, one special moment was captured by Elon Musk's six-year-old son, Lil X, whose full name is X Æ A-Xii.
The little boy appeared at official meetings in the corridors of the People's Palace alongside his father, who often carries him by his side in public appearances. He wore a sky-blue silk vest, embroidered with motifs inspired by the Tang Dynasty, adapted to a modern style. But what attracted the most attention was the small, handmade tiger-head-shaped shoulder bag. The reaction in China was immediate: social networks “went crazy” after him.
The Chinese public was captivated by the energetic little boy and appreciated the way Elon Musk had respected elements of traditional Chinese culture. The footage went viral within hours. Meanwhile, at a difficult time for US-China trade relations, the makers of the vest and the handcrafted bag faced an extraordinary demand. Both products sold out in record time.
The bag is made by Yastee, a Chinese craft brand founded 19 years ago in the Guangxi autonomous region in southern China near the border with Vietnam. The traditional pattern is called “Hǔtóu,” which translates to “tiger head,” a well-known symbol of Chinese folk art, now reimagined with modern elements in the “Guochao,” or “national fashion,” trend.
Musk's choice for his son does not seem accidental. In Chinese culture, filled with symbols and superstition, clothing with tiger head motifs is worn by children to protect them from evil spirits, diseases and to bring them luck, strength and health.
For this reason, online platforms that still had stock of the bag were "attacked" by buyers until the product was completely exhausted. Soon after, collectors also entered the game, who conquered the online resale markets. The bag cost about 39 euros, but many people were looking for the exact series used by Lil X and were willing to pay up to ten times more.
The little boy himself appeared completely calm amidst all the attention, perhaps thanks to his very unusual name, filled with symbols that have aroused great interest in the Chinese public, always passionate about hidden meanings.
Its name is a mix of references to mathematics, artificial intelligence and the space industry, areas where Elon Musk is increasingly focusing his activity. “X” represents the unknown in mathematics; “Æ” is related to artificial intelligence; while “A-Xii” is a reference to the futuristic Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft, built for the CIA in 1967, capable of flying at speeds of Mach 3, or about 3,540 kilometers per hour.
However, California law does not allow the registration of names with numbers, so "12" was replaced with "Xii", as an homage to Roman numerals and Latin.
The only question mark about Chinese superstition is related to the part of the name that refers to artificial intelligence: has it brought more misfortune than good fortune? For many, the answer may be yes.
On the artificial intelligence front, Elon Musk has so far faced more controversy than success, both in business and in terms of public image. The billionaire left OpenAI, the company he had invested in and which is now known for ChatGPT, to build his own rival project. He did not take well to the fact that Sam Altman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, transformed the organization from a “non-profit” to a for-profit structure.
In his forthright style, Musk immediately sued Altman. In recent weeks, the courtroom has heard testimony from prominent American technology figures, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Musk has called Altman a "pathological liar," but one of the episodes that attracted the most attention during the process was the revelation about his relationship with Shivon Zilis, his current partner and the mother of some of his children.
“I met her on the board of directors of OpenAI,” Musk testified. “Since she had no children, I offered her my sperm so she could become a mother. That’s how it happened, and then four children were born.”
The conflict between Musk and Altman also created a vested interest problem for Zilis, who was forced to step down from OpenAI's board of directors.
The jury has not yet reached a final decision and the verdict is expected to be issued soon.
Another element that has piqued the curiosity of the Chinese public is the fact that Lil X's biological mother is not Shivon Zilis, but Canadian singer and artist Grimes.
And there's another interesting detail: both Grimes and Zilis are Canadian.
