Donald Trump administration officials are discussing the possibility of holding a second face-to-face meeting with Iranian representatives before the end of a ceasefire between the two countries next week, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the talks, who described the discussions as still in the preliminary stages.
According to sources, US authorities are considering possible dates and locations for a new round of negotiations, depending on the progress of current contacts with Iran and regional mediators.
"We must be prepared to act quickly if the situation develops in that direction," the source said.
The latest meeting, held in Islamabad on Saturday, was the result of weeks of intense negotiations involving senior US officials and mediators from countries including Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Oman. A regional source said another round of talks is expected, as Turkey tries to narrow the differences between the parties.
Before the Islamabad meeting, several cities such as Geneva, Vienna and Istanbul had been proposed. According to sources, Geneva and Islamabad remain possible options for a future meeting.
US officials are cautiously optimistic about achieving diplomatic progress. Depending on the progress of negotiations in the coming days, the possibility of extending the ceasefire deadline to create more space for dialogue is not ruled out.
