What began as a festive campaign event quickly turned into a scene of horror in the Mexican state of Veracruz on Sunday evening, when a mayoral candidate was shot dead along with three other people.
The scene was broadcast live on Facebook. The video shows Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, who represents Mexico's ruling Morena party, greeting residents and parading with a group of supporters in a festive atmosphere, as reported by CNN.
The crowd laughs, sings and shouts slogans until the sound of gunfire drowns everything out. At least 20 consecutive shots are heard, while the camera continues to film.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the attack during a press conference. She said there was currently no clear picture of the motive and added that the federal government was coordinating with Veracruz authorities and providing all necessary support, including cooperation with the state attorney general.
"We are in constant communication with the Minister of Public Security, offering full support to Veracruz and Durango, ahead of the June 1 elections," he said.
The Veracruz prosecutor's office announced that four people were killed in the attack, including Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, a candidate for the ruling Morena party, while three others were injured.
"No position or office is worth more than a human life," Veracruz governor Rocio Nale wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter). "We will find those responsible for this cowardly murder of candidate Morena and her supporters in Texistepec."
