Strike in Athens

Greek transport workers went on strike today for higher wages, as ships remained docked in ports and rail traffic was suspended.

Rallies were held in all major cities of the country as part of the 24-hour strike announced by GSEE. In Athens, the Syntagma and the surrounding streets have been closed with thousands of people protesting demanding higher wages and the reinstatement of collective agreements.

The metro, trams, commuter trains and trains have stopped today, while buses are running as normal and will run until 9pm, when the work stoppage resumes.

Work stoppages are also planned for trolleys and taxis, while ships will remain tied up in ports. According to a Hellenic Train announcement, a number of train lines will operate only with security personnel.

The workers were joined in a one-day strike by Greece's largest private sector union, GSEE, which says workers' wages in Greece continue to lag behind those in the rest of Europe.

This month, Greece raised the monthly gross minimum wage by 6.4 percent to 830 euros, the fourth consecutive increase in the past five years. Workers in Greece, however, claim that wage increases are not enough to cover rising food and housing prices.
