South Korea's National Intelligence Service estimates that Kim Jong Un has directed his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, towards inheriting power in North Korea.

The agency bases this conclusion on her increased presence at official events and continued exposure in state media. She most recently accompanied her father to Beijing, her first documented trip abroad.

Intelligence officials say they will monitor whether Kim Yo-Ae will attend the Workers' Party Congress, which is held every five years and is the country's most important political event. At this forum, the leadership sets the direction for foreign policy, military strategy and nuclear program for the next five years.

Kim Ju Ae is the only publicly known child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. South Korean media believe the leader has an older son, but he has never appeared in public or in official media.

Her name became known in 2013, when American basketball player Dennis Rodman told a British newspaper that he had held the baby in his arms during a visit to North Korea. In 2022, state television broadcast for the first time footage of her during an inspection of an intercontinental ballistic missile, where she stood next to her father.

Since then, she has appeared regularly at state functions. In Beijing, she took part in a major military parade and was seen disembarking from the leader's armored train at the Chinese capital's railway station.

Power in North Korea has passed through three generations of the Kim family. The latest South Korean intelligence assessment suggests that this line of succession may continue with Kim Ju Ae, although questions remain due to the traditional patriarchal structure of North Korean society.
