Taiwan's Vice Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung said in an interview with international media that the Chinese government is preparing for an invasion of the island. According to him, the Taiwanese population "can no longer be as naive as before" in light of the military escalation in the region.
The statement was made to British broadcaster Sky News as part of an investigative documentary that traveled to the cities of Taipei, Taoyuan and the Penghu archipelago, the latter considered a strategic point in the event of conflict. During the visits, civil defense drills and evacuation exercises were recorded that highlighted structural shortcomings in emergency response.
Wu was blunt when he said that "Taiwan, alone, facing China, will never be prepared. It is impossible, given the difference in size and resources."
The warning comes amid a series of military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait and intensive air strikes in the island's air defense zone. Meanwhile, Taiwanese authorities have strengthened anti-espionage laws, improved digital security and implemented civil resistance measures.
However, experts warn that an outright invasion would carry high costs for any power involved. One of the most frightening strategies at the moment would be a partial naval blockade, capable of economically isolating Taiwan without immediate confrontation.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, as Taiwan plays a key role in the global semiconductor supply chain. Any direct conflict would have economic and political impacts on a global scale.
