German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has decided not to attend today's summit of the European Political Community in Yerevan, Armenia.
This is the first time that Germany has been absent from the summits of this forum, created to discuss European strategic issues, especially its security, following Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The summit in Armenia is seen as an opportunity to accelerate cooperation among a coalition of mid-level states in the face of Trump's threats.
This year's summit will bring together 48 heads of state and government from across the continent under the motto "Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe", while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend as a guest at the summit, marking the first time a non-European country has participated in the meeting.
At a time of profound geopolitical transformations, discussions will focus on strengthening cooperation between European countries, coordinating actions to increase democratic sustainability, and advancing connectivity and economic and energy security.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama arrived in Yerevan yesterday evening, at the same time as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
