The World Health Organization (WHO) has said it is deeply concerned about the spread of infectious diseases in Gaza as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remain displaced, with many in overcrowded shelters and health facilities.
In a statement on Friday, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the following diseases and conditions have been documented in shelters across the Gaza Strip since the start of the war.
About 180,000 cases of upper respiratory infections
136,400 cases of diarrhea - half of children under 5 years old
55,400 cases of lice and scabies
5330 cases of chicken pox
42,700 cases of skin rash
4683 cases of acute jaundice syndrome
126 cases of meningitis
"WHO and partners are working tirelessly to support health authorities to increase disease surveillance and control by supplying medicines, testing kits to support rapid detection and response to infectious diseases such as hepatitis, and striving to improve access to safe water, food, hygiene and sanitary services", the statement said.
So far, 1.9 million Palestinians, making up about 85% of Gaza's population, have been displaced since October 7, according to UNRWA.
Meanwhile, only 13 of 36 hospitals remain partially functioning across Gaza, with two others minimally functioning, the WHO said in a statement on Wednesday.
