A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump is considered necessary by the Kremlin, but requires careful and thorough preparation, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.
"Such a meeting is really necessary; everyone understands this, and both presidents have expressed their readiness to hold it. However, it must be prepared carefully and thoroughly," Peskov told reporters.
His comments came in response to remarks made by Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov after a recent phone call between the two leaders. According to Ushakov, although a face-to-face meeting was not discussed during the call, the idea “is in the air.”
Putin and Trump held a phone conversation the day before, their fourth in just a month and a half and their sixth since the beginning of the year. The conversation lasted about an hour and focused on developments in Ukraine, the Middle East and other international issues.
Although no meeting has been formalized yet, the level of communication and the willingness declared by both sides leave open the possibility of a close meeting between the two presidents, at a time when global tensions and the war in Ukraine remain international priorities.
