NATO chief: European countries got Trump's message on military bases
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says European countries have "got the message" from Donald Trump and are now ensuring that agreements on the use of military bases are implemented.

Trump has accused some NATO countries of not doing enough to support the United States in its war with Iran. In a further sign of discontent with European allies, the United States announced plans on Friday to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.

"Yes, there was some disappointment on the part of the United States, but the Europeans listened," Rutte told reporters during a meeting of the European Political Community in Armenia.

"They are now ensuring that all bilateral agreements on the use of bases are implemented," the NATO chief added.

Spain, a NATO member, has said that military bases on its territory cannot be used for war with Iran.

However, Rutte noted that other Alliance countries, such as Montenegro, Croatia, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Britain, France and Germany are responding to requests for the use of bases and other logistical support.

He also said that more and more European countries are prepositioning military assets, such as minesweepers and minesweepers, near the Persian Gulf so that they are ready for a "next phase."

Recently, several European countries have expressed their willingness to participate in a mission to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz after the end of the war.
