Cybercriminals stole a total of $2.7 billion (around €2.5 billion) in cryptocurrencies during 2025. This is a new record for attacks on exchanges and decentralized finance (DeFi) projects, according to blockchain monitoring firms such as Chainalysis and TRM Labs.
The biggest heist this year was at Dubai-based cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, where hackers stole an estimated $1.4 billion. Authorities, including the FBI, blamed the attack on North Korean hacking groups, who have been among the most active in cryptocurrency attacks in recent years. The heist is considered the largest cryptocurrency heist in human history and one of the largest financial heists ever.
Previous major heists included attacks on the Ronin network and the Poly network in 2022, with losses of $624 million and $611 million, respectively. In addition to the Bybit attack, other major hacks this year included the decentralized exchange Cetus, where hackers made off with $223 million.
Experts warn that cybercriminals targeting cryptocurrency exchanges and DeFi projects are not slowing down. For comparison, $2.2 billion was stolen in 2024, while in 2023 the total was $2 billion.
