While many people in the Middle East have been focused on the conflicts in Lebanon and Iran, the extent of the damage in Gaza is also under scrutiny again. A new report from the United Nations and the European Union says that rebuilding Gaza will require more than $71.4 billion.
The report says more than 370,000 homes have been destroyed, half of Gaza's hospitals are not functioning, and the Gaza Strip's economy has shrunk by 84% during the Israel-Hamas conflict.
These are some of the most grim findings of the report, designed to assess the scale of both the destruction and the work needed to restore Gaza over the next decade.
The report, known as the Rapid Needs and Damage Assessment, concludes that 1.9 million people have been displaced, often in multiple cases, with more than 60% of the population having lost their homes, and claims that human development has been "pushed back by 77 years".
The report claims that $26.3 billion is needed over the next 18 months to restore essential services, including banking and telephone communications, to rebuild critical infrastructure, such as schools, hospitals and sanitation, and to support Gaza's economic recovery.
The report says that the "minimum conditions" necessary for recovery and reconstruction to succeed are "a durable ceasefire and adequate security."
It also calls for unrestricted humanitarian access, free movement of people, goods and reconstruction materials between Gaza and the West Bank, as well as a "functional and transparent financial system."
