The French Prime Minister gambled and lost!

Increasingly, there is a view that the only way out of this mess is for Macron himself to leave; something that has been consistently rejected...

The result was never in doubt, but it has cast real doubt on the future of France. Francois Bayrou gambled and lost. The French prime minister called a surprise no-confidence vote in late August, and this evening the National Assembly in Paris voted to remove him from office.

This leaves France with no solution to its worsening economic crisis, and President Emmanuel Macron with few good options.

He is now forced to seek a new prime minister, his fifth in just over two years. But there is no guarantee that this will break a parliamentary deadlock that he caused after losing his parliamentary majority following snap elections in 2024.

Increasingly, there is a view that the only way out of this mess is for Macron himself to leave; something that has been consistently rejected.

The National Assembly, like many political chambers, voted according to its own interests. The Socialists feel sidelined by Mr Macron and want their own person installed as Prime Minister; the National Rally, Marine Le Pen's far-right party, wants new elections because it is certain of success, while the Far Left simply wants to overthrow the French president.

Bayrou's argument for economic reform, however sound, fell on deaf ears. He warned that without rapid and comprehensive reforms, France would continue to teeter "towards the edge of the abyss."

His opponents did not believe this, they accuse him of spreading panic and blame the instability on Macron's eight years in power.

Macron came to power with the famous prediction that France was a country incapable of reform. Then, this was seen as a personal challenge to the young and self-confident leader. Now, he has 18 months left in office to prove him wrong./ Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "SkyNews"
