Greek Prime Minister Warns from Germany: Europe Risks Not Being the Author of
Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered some strong political messages during the Charlemagne Prize award ceremony in Aachen, where former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi was honored.

He warned that Europe is at a critical moment and risks losing its decisive role on the global stage.

In his speech, Mitsotakis said that the European Union faces challenges related to competitiveness, innovation and dependence on third countries. According to him, without investments in technology and strategic development, Europe's power will weaken.

The Greek Prime Minister described Europe as a political and historical project that is built on common choices, despite the differences between member states. He emphasized that European unity requires continuous efforts and responsible leadership.

A significant part of the speech was dedicated to Mario Draghi and his role during the eurozone debt crisis. Mitsotakis recalled the former ECB head's historic statement on the defense of the euro, considering it crucial for Europe's financial stability.

He underlined that Greece was one of the countries hit hardest by the economic crisis and expressed gratitude for the support that, according to him, figures such as Mario Draghi, Jean-Claude Trichet and Jacques Delors gave to the country during that period.

Mitsotakis also spoke about the issue of European security, stating that a Europe that is unable to defend itself cannot be considered fully sovereign. He said that security is not only related to military defense, but also to energy, infrastructure, institutions and supply chains.

In this context, he called for the mutual assistance clause of Article 42(7) of the European Union to be implemented more effectively, so that collective protection has a real role in practice.

The Greek prime minister also supported the idea of joint European borrowing to finance the Union's strategic objectives, especially in the defense sector. According to him, the EU's political ambitions should be supported by a stronger budget.

At the end of his speech, Mitsotakis emphasized that Europe must maintain its self-confidence and ability to make major decisions in difficult historical moments.
