Iran's first vice president, Muhammad Mukhbar, is the person who will take over as the country's interim president following the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash.
The Constitution of Iran stipulates that presidential elections be held 50 days after the death of the head of state, while Article 131 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic provides that "in the event of the death, impeachment, resignation, absence or illness of the president, lasting more than two month", the first vice president assumes his duties.
Thus, the process must be approved by Iran's supreme leader, the post held by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The constitution provides that a council, consisting of "the speaker of the parliament, the head of justice and the first vice-president, must organize the elections for a new president within a period of 50 days".
But who is Muhammad Mukhbar?
The new interim president of Iran is 68 years old. He was appointed to the post in August 2021 by Raisi and is considered close to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all matters of governance.
Muhammad Mukhbar was born in Dezful of Khuzestan province and held many high positions. He has also served as the head of several companies and since 2007 has been the chairman of the Foundation of the Order of Imams (Setad) which manages the properties confiscated after the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
According to the British The Guardian, Mukhbar is not considered a person who can stay long in the post of president.
He was part of the Iranian delegation that visited Moscow last October and agreed to supply surface-to-surface missiles and drones to Russia's armed forces.
In 2010 his name was included in a list of individuals and entities sanctioned by the European Union for involvement in "nuclear or ballistic missile activities" and two years later his name was removed from this list.
