"La Repubblica": The refugee deal with Albania divides the Italian

The Rama-Meloni agreement to bring refugees to Albania is dividing the Italian government.

The newspaper "La Repubblica" writes that the draft signed on Monday in Rome did not like Matteo Salvini's La Lega, which is part of the governing coalition.

"The point is this: the diplomatic path is in order, Meloni's agreement with Albania is excellent. But Italy must be Italy. We need to take responsibility. Salvini, when he became Minister of the Interior, stopped illegal immigration. Perhaps this has caused others to be more careful in these matters", says the deputy secretary of La Lega, Andrea Crippa, who has confirmed the clashes in the government.

He says that the agreement with Tirana "is a good move by Meloni. Finally, a country on the European continent, which is led by a socialist, because Rama is a socialist, is helping Italy". From a substantive point of view he says it is an excellent result, but were ministers informed?

"I don't know if he told Piantedos (Minister of the Interior) or not. As deputy secretary and MP I have not been asked to get involved. Salvini commented yesterday and seemed pleased. Diplomacy is necessary, but, as Salvini has shown, a strong fist is also needed in relation to the deportation of immigrants. Also because the message to be sent there is: don't leave, because you won't arrive in Italy.

From the essential point of view the agreement is perfect, from the structural point of view it would be necessary for the European Union to do as Albania did. And this means that the EU must make itself available to help Italy. If a socialist like Rama does this, there are other countries that can lend an extra hand. They didn't do it before, they're not doing it now," he says.

There is another detail that is causing debate in Italy. This is because the agreement with Albania "will not pass the Parliament". Meloni did not consider it as an international agreement, but as an amendment to a treaty.

"This is a cooperation treaty strengthening the cooperation between Italy and Albania on the issue of immigration, which has already been foreseen by previous international agreements signed the first in 1995 and the other in 2017", says the minister for relations with the parliament Luca Ciriani.

The opposition reacted harshly, demanding that the draft go to parliament.

"In Italy, international agreements are passed by the Parliament, and for us it is unacceptable that this does not pass the Parliament. They don't do it because they know it contradicts Article 10 of the Constitution", says the Democratic Party.

Even Giuseppe Conte has criticized the agreement with Albania for refugees.
