Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini faces a battle to save his far-right party, the Lega, from electoral disintegration.
The party's internal crisis erupted into public view last week after Salvini's rebel deputy, Roberto Vannacci, a former general and protege of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, threatened to form a party called National Future, which would lead to the split of the Lega.
Salvini seeks to minimize the split with his number 2, but Vannacci's move clearly revealed how the Lega, a key part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing governing coalition, risks disintegrating as a political force before next year's elections.
Current and former party members told Politico that Salvini's split with Vannacci had exposed a deeper and potentially destructive factional struggle at the heart of the party, between moderates and extremists, and whether the League should return to its roots and seek northern autonomy from Rome.
In the short term, the Lega's weakness could bring some relief to Meloni, as both Salvini and Vannacci are seen as strong links to Putin and the Kremlin. In the long term, however, the party's complete dissolution would potentially make it harder for him to build coalitions and maintain Italy's unusually stable government.
The tensions between Salvini and Vannacci could no longer be hidden. On January 24, Vannacci registered a trademark for his new party, “National Future.” He later distanced himself from an Instagram account announcing the party’s founding, but hinted in X that he might still turn to social media to found a party when the time comes. “If I decide to open such channels, I will let you know,” he said.
Many League members are hostile to Vannacci, especially those alarmed by the former paratrooper’s soothing language toward Mussolini and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. A powerful bloc in the Lega that is more socially moderate, and deeply committed to northern autonomy, is pressuring Salvini to take the initiative and dismiss Vannacci, according to two people involved in the party’s discussions.

"I think that if there are differences within the party, this can enrich the party. But creating local branches, holding demonstrations outside the party, registering a new logo and website, this is an anomaly, these are issues that [Salvini] will examine," he told reporters in Milan on Friday.
Every vote matters.
There is no guarantee that any party Vannacci launches will be a success. Three leaders in his “Bota Kthehu Front” movement, seen as a precursor to his National Future party, resigned on Friday, issuing a statement describing a lack of leadership and “permanent chaos.”
But his party could shake up the political landscape, even if it gets only a relatively small amount of support from the Lega. Meloni will be keeping a close eye on the arithmetic of potential alliances in the run-up to next year's elections, especially if left-wing parties unite against it.
Pollster Lorenzo Pregliasco of You Trend, who is campaigning for a potential new party led by Vannacci, said there was a potential constituency to the right of the coalition of around 2 percent, among voters who had supported [Meloni's] Brothers of Italy, Lega voters and non-voters with an anti-immigrant and anti-political correctness stance who are attracted to Vannacci's sincerity.
The potential party "poses some risks for Meloni and the coalition. It's not a large electorate, but in national elections two points can make the difference between winning and not winning, or winning but with a very narrow majority that could mean you won't be able to form a government."
Vannacci "has been smart in presenting himself as a provocative opinion leader and turning this into electoral success. He has the potential to be a strong media presence and at the center of political debate."
The northern separatist movement "Pact for the North", led by former Lega MP Paolo Grimoldi, said Salvini's reputation was now damaged because of the trust he had placed in Vannacci.
While Salvini could resign and support an alternative figure like Zaia as leader of the Lega, that was extremely unlikely, Grimoldi told Politico.
“If not, there are no means to get rid of it before the next elections,” he said, adding “the result will be a lack of political relevance and electoral defeat [for the League],” he said. /Adapted from Politico /
