A year later and despite billions of dollars already approved by Congress, the ambitious project has not progressed beyond design.
A year after Donald Trump's grandiose promises to create an impressive missile defense shield to protect the United States, the "Golden Dome" program remains stuck on paper, with serious technological, financial and organizational obstacles blocking its progress.
When Donald Trump unveiled his vision for the "Golden Dome," he vowed that the US military would build, in record time, in just three years, a complete missile defense shield. A year later and despite billions of dollars already approved by Congress, the ambitious project has not progressed beyond design.
The Defense Department has yet to begin developing the vast network of sensors and interceptors the program requires, according to two defense industry executives and two former Pentagon officials who spoke to Politico. One reason is that the White House has yet to release the funding Congress approved for the dome’s architecture, which has put the defense industry on hold.
"The entire project is in jeopardy," warned a former senior Pentagon official, highlighting the serious consequences that delays could have.
Sources familiar with the discussions say Trump's goal of completing such a gigantic project in just three years is being "stymied" by conflicting messages to the industry, but also technological and logistical challenges that seem almost insurmountable.
At the heart of the initial design are space-based interceptors, systems that can destroy enemy missiles within minutes of their launch. Even if the United States could build a reliable early warning and interception network, ground-based missiles are much cheaper to produce. An enemy force could easily bypass the system by flooding the airspace with relatively inexpensive missiles.
The head of the US Space Corps, Wing Commander Michael Guetline, said the Department of Defense plans to test a space-based interceptor in 2028, without specifying what technology would be demonstrated or how complex the test would be.
In an official statement, the Pentagon said that the Golden Dome program office "continues to meet the goals" set forth in the relevant executive order, adding that the implementation plan remains "dynamic," while the basic elements of the architecture have now been defined.

There is similar discontent in Congress, where concerns are being raised about the Pentagon's slow pace. Lawmakers have yet to receive a detailed plan for how the Defense Department plans to spend the $23 billion it has approved. According to a defense industry representative and a congressional aide with knowledge of the matter, the "Golden Dome" funds are expected in the latest package of funds approved outside the regular defense budget, but it is not clear exactly when they will be released.
Representative Jeff Crank, co-chair of the bipartisan House task force on the Golden Dome, said he had been briefed on the program's architecture and was confident in the success of Gen. Michael Guetline's plan, but was waiting for the final "green light" from the White House. "Basically what we're waiting for is approval from the White House, and then, I believe, all the funds that have been approved will be released ," Crank said. "For those of us who support the president's goal, the waiting process is frustrating, and I'm sure it is for the president himself."
Separate budget officials have criticized the Pentagon for a lack of information about the Golden Dome program, urging the department to submit a comprehensive spending plan within 60 days of the annual defense budget. Pentagon officials attribute the secrecy in part to the need to protect classified plans from adversaries. Guetline said in January that "malicious actors" have already tried to infiltrate the defense industry base through cyberattacks.
The Defense Department held a single briefing with industry in August to outline its plans. However, Guetline said there are no plans for another such event in the near future, as the Pentagon has been “overexposed” to security threats since the first meeting. Instead, he said, it is meeting privately with companies to discuss its operational needs.
Golden Dome also requires key allies, such as Canada and Greenland, to agree to use radar and airspace in the Arctic to detect incoming missiles. But trade wars have complicated the process, Guetline said last week, adding another layer of difficulty to the already complex project.
