US President Donald Trump revived the idea of the US annexing Gaza as a way to rebuild Palestinian territory during a business roundtable in Qatar.
"I think I would be proud if the United States had it, took it, made it a safe zone. Let some good things happen, put people in their homes where they can be safe, and Hamas will have to be dealt with by us. I have concepts for Gaza that I think are very good. Make it a safe zone, let the United States be involved ," Trump said, during a roundtable with Qatari officials, in the presence of reporters.
Trump further added that from satellite images it is clear that there is no building left standing in Gaza and that it would take a long time to rebuild and that the US could turn it into a free zone.
" They have never solved the Gaza problem and if you look at it, I have aerial views, I mean there is practically no building standing, there is no building. People are living under the rubble of buildings that collapsed, which is unacceptable, it is a terrible death. And I want to see it be a zone of freedom ," the US president said.
Trump's comments come amid reports of multiple airstrikes hitting the Gaza city of Khan Younis on Thursday night. This is not the first time the President has floated ideas about the future of Gaza, which is currently ruled by Hamas.
In January, while speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said he wanted Jordan and Egypt to accept Palestinians, suggesting a "cleansing" of the Gaza Strip.
“We’re talking about maybe a million and a half people, and we’re just cleaning up the whole thing. I don’t know. Something has to happen, but right now it’s a place for destruction ,” Trump said. The idea drew strong rebuke from Arab countries.
When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the White House in February, Trump once again shared his vision for the war-torn location.
“The US will take control of the Gaza Strip. We will do a job with it. We will own it and be responsible for dismantling all the bombs and other dangerous weapons. We will flatten it, create an economic development that will provide an unlimited number of jobs and housing for the people of the area ,” he said.
When asked what authority would allow the US to implement this idea and whether he was talking about a permanent occupation there, Trump replied: “ I see a long-term ownership position and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East and probably the entire Middle East.”
Trump went on to say that it was not a decision made lightly and claimed that everyone he has spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land.
Standing next to Trump, Netanyahu said that one of Israel's main goals was to ensure that Gaza never again posed a threat to Israel, adding that Trump's offer would take that goal to a much higher level.
"I think it's worth paying attention to ," Netanyahu concluded.
Later in February, President Trump shared a video made with artificial intelligence on his social media platform TruthSocial depicting "Trump Gaza."
The video included artificial intelligence-generated images of a golden statue of the US President in Gaza, luxury cars and skyscrapers in a rebuilt Gaza Strip. The clip drew harsh criticism from Palestinians in Gaza.
