Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has stressed the need for a ceasefire as a first step towards starting direct negotiations with Israel, during a meeting with British Minister for the Middle East, Hamish Falconer.
He stated that Lebanon is ready to stop the escalation of the situation in the south and throughout the country, while simultaneously demanding a halt to attacks on civilians.
In a public statement, Aoun stressed that the negotiations will be conducted solely by the Lebanese authorities, without interference from other parties.
Another important demand of his was the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territories, as a condition for strengthening the ceasefire and restoring control by the Lebanese army up to the international borders.
"The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territories is an essential step to consolidate the ceasefire on the one hand and to restore the Lebanese army to international borders," he said.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that communication may take place between Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, there is no official confirmation from the parties yet.
