US President Joe Biden held a press conference after the release of 17 hostages from captivity in Gaza, including a 4-year-old American-Israeli girl.
The Red Cross took 17 hostages Sunday, including Israelis and foreign nationals, the Israeli military confirmed. Thirty-nine Palestinians will be freed later today, Qatar said, in the third such exchange of a four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Biden began his speech by expressing his joy at the release of the 4-year-old American-Israeli girl.
" Avigail Idan, who turned four while in captivity, spent her birthday... being held hostage by Hamas. Today she is free, and Jilly and I, along with so many Americans, are praying that she will be okay. What she endured is unimaginable ," Biden said, adding that Avigail has been through a terrible trauma.
Biden also stressed that his administration would work to "extend the agreement" that has brought about the concessions and seen a temporary pause in the fighting in Gaza.
" Today's hostage releases come as a result of intense US diplomacy. We continue to press and expect more Americans to be released. We will not stop working until every hostage is returned to their loved ones ," he said.
