Tehran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the West's crackdown on secret oil fleets signal a new phase in the global showdown over energy and sanctions, with far-reaching consequences for Russia, China and the world economy.
Tehran's campaign of attacks threatens to disrupt clandestine shipping networks and sanctions-evading routes, raising energy costs for Moscow and Beijing and potentially squeezing Russia's war funds and China's industrial and military supply chains.
Since Monday, the Iranian regime has declared the Strait of Hormuz, between the Iranian island of Hormuz and the Omani enclave of Khasab, closed, warning that ships passing through could be "burned."
Oil tanker traffic immediately fell sharply, as merchant mariners now fear missile attacks. The conflict has also affected the so-called “ghost fleet,” a network of unflagged or hidden-flag oil tankers linked to economically isolated countries such as Cuba, Iran and Russia.
The United States has already imposed a kind of maritime quarantine on oil imports to Cuba, while countries like Mexico have been warned not to ship oil to hostile regimes.
European partners have also taken action against ships of this "ghost fleet", increasing pressure on China and especially Russia amid new tensions.
The Belgian military on Monday stopped a ghost fleet tanker called the MT Ethera as it was transiting the North Sea.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken told GCaptain News that the tanker was diverted to the port of Zeebrugge under escort and will be seized by Belgian authorities.
"Operation Blue Intruder was carried out by an extremely brave team of military personnel. Excellent work," he said, while media also reported that the ship was linked to a person close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to reports, MT Ethera is linked to the son of senior Iranian political advisor Ali Shamkhani, whose family allegedly controls an entire fleet of tankers that could be used to facilitate Iranian and Russian oil trade.
A consortium of Western powers also enforces a price cap on Russian Urals oil, which was last month lowered to around $44 a barrel. The mechanism, named after the Ural Mountains, is intended to keep Russian oil below free market prices.

“Irani shfrytëzon sistemet financiare për të shitur naftë të paligjshme, për të pastruar të ardhurat, për të siguruar komponentë për programet e tij bërthamore dhe të armëve konvencionale dhe për të mbështetur aleatët e tij terroristë.

According to US authorities, ships flying the flags of Panama, Barbados, Palau, Comoros, Iran and Vanuatu have transported millions of barrels of Iranian oil in recent years.
