War in Israel, Italy gives 'peace formula': To neutralize Hamas, hope
Antonio Tajani

The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, after a meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has come up with a hypothesis on how the war in Israel can end.

Antonio Tajani said that in order to neutralize Hamas, Israel must give hope to the Palestinian people.

According to him, from the evidence of Italian intelligence and those of other countries, there is no evidence of Israel's responsibility for the bombing of the hospital in Gaza.

"No one is able to make predictions, it is too early. It is pointless to pretend that nothing happened: we all know very well that Israel has prepared thousands of soldiers to enter Gaza, to hit the Hamas terrorists. I hope that the conditions for a return to political negotiations will be created soon. We are working on it. Meanwhile, Israel and Egypt must allow the provision of supplies and aid to the population of Gaza and allow the evacuation of foreigners from the Strip, while protecting the lives of all hostages," he said.

Asked if this latest tragedy is the right opportunity to resolve the conflict between the two peoples, Tajani says that a solution for a Palestinian state is now practically impossible.

"I want to share this hope, that the push for improvement can come from a very deep crisis. But we cannot afford to be naive: we are still in the midst of a military crisis. It is clear that there can be only one direction: to move towards a solution that respects the security and aspirations of the two peoples. Many say that a Palestinian state solution is now virtually impossible: I don't want to believe it, political will can still provide a solution. For Israel, the best way to neutralize the Hamas project is to give concrete hope to the Palestinian people," Tajani emphasizes.

When asked if he imagines the situation for Gaza and the West Bank with what happened in Kosovo, with an international protectorate and a peacekeeping contingent, he said:

"It's an interesting question, it's the real question: We're all working dramatically to curb the possibility of a new escalation of war. But after? Who will rule Gaza? The Israelites? I do not believe. So who? United Nations? A coalition of volunteers? But even before that, who will enter Gaza to take care of the lives of 2 million people? Even without new military action, Gaza is already a nightmare, we must unite and prepare to respond to this emergency, better than in the past."
