Negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad are taking place in a volatile climate, with visible fluctuations in the positions of both sides. According to a Pakistani source for Reuters, the atmosphere during the meetings has been volatile.

" There were fluctuations in positions on both sides and tension rose and fell throughout the meeting ," the source stated.

According to information obtained by Al Jazeera from inside the Serena Hotel, where the talks are taking place, the Iranian delegation plans to stay overnight and has no intention of leaving immediately after the working sessions end. This suggests that the negotiations could extend beyond the initial deadline.

Diplomatic sources say that the exchange of draft texts between delegations indicates a certain level of progress towards a basic framework agreement. However, the specific points of agreement remain unclear.

At the same time, time appears to be a key factor. US Vice President JD Vance was expected to be in Pakistan for about 24 hours, and more than half of that time has already passed. It is not clear whether he will extend his stay depending on the progress of the negotiations.

Meanwhile, signals from the Iranian side point to difficulties in reaching a compromise. Sources close to the Iranian delegation told Al Jazeera that the US demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz are "overly ambitious", suggesting that the talks may have reached a difficult point.

It is not yet clear whether the negotiations will continue overnight or even on Sunday, and whether the US delegation's agenda will change. Vance arrived in Islamabad around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, while the Iranian delegation had arrived after midnight and had earlier held bilateral meetings with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

At this stage, the process remains open, with limited signs of progress, but also with a real risk of deadlock, as the parties try to find common ground on key issues.
