French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the need for immediate and clear action from the European Union, stating that there is a "sense of urgency" in the face of current challenges.
Speaking at a press conference at Alden Biesen Castle alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after a preparatory meeting ahead of the EU leaders' summit, Macron stressed that the priority is to respond in the very short term.
“ We share a sense of urgency: Europe must act with clarity ,” he said. According to the French president, the first step is the immediate implementation of the measures agreed upon by member states. “ We must move quickly and have very concrete decisions by June ,” he added.
Macron also stressed that if progress is not achieved with all 27 member states, enhanced cooperation mechanisms should be used, which allow a group of countries to advance more quickly in certain areas.
The statements come at a time when the EU faces multiple pressures, from security and defense, to economic competitiveness and geopolitical challenges. Paris and Berlin aim to push forward a more coordinated and effective agenda, with an emphasis on rapid decision-making and practical implementation of joint commitments.
