The afternoon of June 17 was bloody and violent in Racale, Italy, where Teresa Sommario, a 54-year-old local employee, was murdered by her son, who attacked her with an axe in several parts of her body while she was in her home on Via Toscana.
The boy's arrest and testimony
The Carabinieri's investigation immediately focused on the woman's 21-year-old son, Filippo Manni, who was stopped by police while wandering the streets of the city and then taken to the police station. There he confessed to killing his mother by hitting her with an axe because she had scolded him for entering the house without saying hello.
"At one point, everything went off inside me. I went upstairs, took the axe and killed him. Other times, as a joke, I've thought about it and told him this, and today I did it," he confessed without showing emotion or remorse.
The 21-year-old was transferred to prison pending his appearance before the investigating judge. He has been placed under increased surveillance. Meanwhile, an autopsy on the body is scheduled for Friday, June 20, to be conducted by the coroner, Alberto Tortorella.
Crime dynamics
After the murder, the young man left the house walking aimlessly, perhaps because he was shocked and confused. The axe with which the woman was killed was his, a “boy-scout” type tool. Filippo, in his childhood, had been part of a small scout group. The woman, who had received serious wounds to the neck, head and chest, although she was helped by emergency teams, died covered in blood, lying on the ground.
The shocked village
The news spread from house to house, bringing surprise and shock to the entire village: Teresa Sommario and her family were known and loved by everyone, as the mayor, Antonio Salsetti, also points out.
"We are shocked, terrified by this incredible tragedy, also because I myself was very close to the family, I knew Teresa well, I know her children, her ex-husband Daniele Manni, currently advisor for Public Works and Urban Planning. Let's see what will happen in the coming hours and what will be revealed by the investigations," said the mayor.
"But there remains a deep, inexplicable sadness for me and for all those who knew Teresa. It is one of those events that leaves you speechless, that you would never want to experience, that you would never want to have happened. But it happened and we can only accept it with a heavy heart," he concluded.
Filippo Manni, an economics student in Rome, had returned to the village about two weeks ago and was temporarily working as a lifeguard. According to the records, he wanted to be present at the celebrations of the patron saint, Saint Sebastian.
The boy has two twin brothers, one of whom raised the alarm after hearing his mother's screams. Then the carabinieri arrived.
"I met Filippo in the last few days in the village and he was smiling, calm, as always. We greeted each other warmly. As far as I know, he had no problems, he had never shown any violent tendencies, he was a calm boy. He had not shown any signs that would make you think he could commit such an act. I am truly shocked, like the entire community of Racale. A large family of 10 thousand people, where everyone knows each other. And now everyone is looking for answers for a tragedy of unprecedented violence," continues the mayor.
Clashes with mother
Investigators are currently trying to reconstruct the reasons that led to the boy's outburst of anger towards his mother. According to what has been revealed so far, the clashes may have been related to the boy's choices and his studies.
Apparently, the boy was thinking of dropping out of university and pursuing his great passion, the guitar, considering the possibility of enrolling at the Lecce Conservatory. But not only that. The collisions may have also been to the family car, as in recent days, the 21-year-old was involved in an accident and damaged the car.
