UK takes aim at Putin, deploys underwater drones to monitor Russian spy ships

London is testing a fleet of underwater drones to track Russian spy ships near British shores, as part of the Royal Navy's new strategy to protect coastlines and critical infrastructure.

The drones, known as SG Fathom or "underwater gliders," are like remotely piloted torpedoes and can patrol underwater for days, moving silently.

General Sir Gwyn Jenkins announced the new Atlantic Bastion program this morning in London.

This multi-million pound plan aims to use technology to become Britain's "eyes and ears" in the Atlantic.

The British Ministry of Defense said the development is “in response to an increase in Russian underwater and submarine activity,” including the spy ship Yantar, which was monitored near UK waters last month.

"The world is becoming an unstable place. We are seeing the rise of authoritarian regimes, just look at Russia. Despite the millions of lives lost and the costs of their illegal invasion of Ukraine, they continue to invest billions in naval capabilities, especially in their Northern Fleet.

"There has been a 30% increase in Russian incursions into our waters over the past two years, most notably in the presence of their spy ships, like the Yantar. But I can tell you today, the Yantar is just the part you see publicly; what concerns me most is what happens below the waves," he said.

Sir Gwyn also warns that the West's advantage in the Atlantic is at risk, with technological developments expected to bring further changes.

He said the hope is to have the first sensors in the water within the next year.
