The sinking of the ship in Greece, the search for the missing 12 sailors
In improved weather conditions and with weakened winds, the coast guard search continued throughout the night with the assistance of vessels in the maritime area southwest of Lesvos to locate the 12 members of the cargo ship "Raptor".

The ship sank yesterday in particularly unfavorable weather conditions.

Two more coast guard vessels and a navy helicopter will participate in the search today, where the press representative of the coast guard explains that according to protocols, a person in water with a temperature of 20 degrees survives for 20 to 26 hours.

From the giant search and rescue operation that was launched since Sunday morning, when the ship gave the distress signal, the Egyptian engineer of the ship was found alive and a body was transferred at 20:00 to the port of Mytilene.

A total of 14 crew members (one Indian, eleven Egyptians and two Syrians) were on board the Raptor, which sank under still unclear circumstances while the ship was transporting salt from Egypt to Istanbul.

The rescued Egyptian sailor was found by a Navy helicopter in a barrel with minor head injuries.

Speaking to the coast guard, he revealed that the "Raptor", which sank in Lesvos, started taking on water since Saturday night.

"The ship was taking on water since last night. We tried with buckets and whatever other means we had on board, to get the water out, to empty it. This is the order we were given. When it started getting dangerous, that's when I jumped into the sea. I saw 5 other people jump into the water and since then I haven't seen them again", he testified as he expressed doubts whether the other members who jumped into the water were wearing life jackets.

During the night, 7 ships, an offshore vessel and a helicopter participated in the search.

It all started at 7am on Saturday morning when the captain reported a mechanical failure to the Department of Commercial Transport operations room.

After about 1-1.5 hours the captain declared that the ship had taken a hit and then they broadcast the distress signal.
