Mexican authorities have seized a submarine carrying about four tons of cocaine in waters near Manzanillo, in the state of Colima, the security secretary, Omar García Harfuch, announced.
According to authorities, naval units spotted the vessel more than 250 nautical miles (about 463 kilometers) southwest of the port of Manzanillo. The operation involved an ocean patrol vessel, two fixed-wing aircraft, two helicopters and two interceptor patrol boats.
On board were 179 packages of narcotics, with a total weight of approximately four tons. The Navy arrested three people who were driving the semi-submarine. The authorities informed them of their rights and will present them to the competent authorities upon arrival in port to determine their legal status.
The operation was supported by intelligence information provided by the United States Northern Command and the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force (JIATF South), according to the official statement.
In a reaction on social media, García Harfuch stated that the seizure represents a direct financial blow to organized crime groups, preventing the distribution of millions of narcotic doses.
According to data from the Ministry of Security, over the past week, maritime authorities have seized nearly 10 tons of cocaine in similar operations. These actions are part of ongoing maritime surveillance operations aimed at preventing illegal activities in Mexican waters.
