Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as strange as it may sound, has an unusual connection with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two lived in the German Democratic Republic, then East Germany.
Merkel was born and raised there for the first 35 years of her life, while the Russian president served as a KGB (Committee for State Security of the Soviet Union) agent in Dresden from 1985 to 1990, both learning each other's language.
In her memoirs, published in the book "Libertad", the former chancellor recounts an unexpected incident from the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, in June 2007.
As she reveals and writes, Putin arrived 45 minutes late: "If there's one thing I can't stand, it's not being on time." When she saw him, she said laughingly: "It's your fault! More specifically, it's Radeberger's fault."
Radeberger is a well-known beer brand that Putin had adored during his stay in Dresden. Merkel, knowing this detail, had sent him a box to his hotel as a gift.
In her book, Merkel notes that Putin seemed to enjoy the role of the man everyone was waiting for: “He probably felt pleasure in having kept the American president waiting,” she writes characteristically, describing in a single sentence the way the Russian leader perceived power and prestige.
