The corruption trial of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will resume on Sunday, immediately after the lifting of the state of emergency declared due to the war with Iran.
According to the Israeli court's announcement, the return to normal functioning of the judicial system after the ceasefire has paved the way for the continuation of the hearings, which will take place from Sunday to Wednesday.
The state of emergency was lifted after no more Iranian missile attacks were reported since the early hours of the morning, following a ceasefire agreement. However, the situation remains fragile, at a time when Israel has carried out intense and deadly attacks in Lebanon, according to international reports.
The resumption of the trial brings Netanyahu's legal woes back into the spotlight. He is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to face criminal charges, including bribery, fraud and abuse of office. Netanyahu has consistently denied the charges, which were filed in 2019 after years of investigations.
The trial, which began in 2020, has been postponed several times due to his official duties and still has no final date. If found guilty, he faces the possibility of a prison sentence.
In this context, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon Netanyahu. According to Trump, the frequent court appearances are affecting his ability to perform his duties.
President Herzog's office has announced that the procedures for considering a pardon follow an institutional process and that pardons are not usually granted while a trial is still ongoing.
According to Reuters, the legal cases, along with security developments following the Hamas attack in October 2023, have affected Netanyahu's political position. Israel is due to hold parliamentary elections in October, where his coalition faces a real risk of defeat.
