"Thousands killed", Khamenei admits massacre in Iran: US seeks to
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has admitted for the first time that thousands of people have been killed in an inhumane and brutal manner during the recent protests in Iran.

Khamenei 'hurled bile' at Donald Trump, calling him a "criminal" for supporting protesters.

"We consider the American president a criminal, because of the victims, damages and accusations against the Iranian nation ," he said.

The ayatollah also added that the protests had left "several thousand people dead." This is the first reaction from the Iranian leader to the scale of the casualties.

He repeated an accusation that the US seeks dominance over Iran's economic and political resources.

Khamenei said the US president has sent "a message to the insurgents saying he will support them and provide them with military support."

He also described the protesters as US "foot soldiers" and said they had destroyed mosques and educational centers.

Demonstrations erupted on December 28 due to economic difficulties within the country, but quickly turned into widespread protests demanding an end to clerical rule.

According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), at least 3,090 people have lost their lives since the beginning. Accurate information remains difficult due to the almost complete internet shutdown in the country.

We recall that US President Donald Trump has called on Iranian protesters to continue the demonstrations and has warned of military intervention if the killings continue.

Meanwhile, the US and the UK have temporarily reduced the number of personnel at Al-Udeid air base in Qatar as a precaution in the event of a retaliatory attack by Iran.
