The Croatian Minister of Defense, Mario Banozic, was involved in an accident on Saturday morning at the exit from Vinkovci, resulting in one death, local media reports.
The vehicle in which the minister was traveling collided with a van and as a result the driver of the latter died.
The government spokesman, Marko Milič, has confirmed the accident and announced the state of health of Banozic. "The minister has serious injuries, according to the first estimates, his life is out of danger," he said. According to unofficial information, he has head, chest and leg injuries.
Banozic was traveling alone and was driving his personal SUV. According to what the Croatian media have reported, it is suspected that the accident happened when the minister overtook a truck on the road and collided head-on with the other vehicle that was coming in front.
"This morning at 06:15 a traffic accident was reported on the state road DC-55 at the exit from Vinkovci in the direction of Zhupanja, in which a van and another car were involved. The driver of the van lost his life in traffic. accident, while the driver of the other vehicle (a state official) was transported to the Vinkovci District General Hospital due to the injuries he received ," the police said.
