A photo purporting to confirm the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reportedly presented as evidence to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump. A day later, an image purporting to show the body of Iran's Supreme Leader being pulled from the rubble following US and Israeli airstrikes circulated on social media.
The post received over 4.8 million views and was widely shared. A pro-Iranian user on the X platform posted the photo on March 1 with the message: “ My leader gave his life, but the Muslim nation did not surrender and did not betray the followers of Imam Hussein .”
The image shows several people who appear to be rescuers standing on concrete rubble as they try to pull a body from under the debris. However, fact-checking organizations and media outlets have raised serious doubts about the authenticity of the photo.
According to analysis published by the verification platform, the behavior of the rescuers in the image appears unusual, as they place their body weight on a large concrete slab covering the victim while trying to remove a smaller piece of rubble.
The image also contains a SynthID watermark, an identifying mark used by Google's AI image generation tools. Another fact-check by Lead Stories found visual inconsistencies, including unnatural lighting and distorted object shapes.
A notable detail is a six-fingered hand on a wooden beam in the foreground, an element considered a typical error in AI-generated images. Also, the structure of the concrete bars and the placement of the wooden beams present deformations that do not match the physical regularity of the construction materials.
The photo also contains two watermarks in Arabic, which can be easily added to any digital file and do not constitute proof of authenticity.
So far, there is no official independent confirmation to support the authenticity of the image circulating on social media. The case highlights the danger of disinformation in times of conflict and the use of Artificial Intelligence technologies to create material that can influence public opinion.
