Due to the winter weather and snow in Greece, roads in the mountainous areas around Athens, Evia and Viotia are closed, while ferries are not leaving the port due to strong winds, Greek media reports today.
Snow fell on the hills of Parnita and Pentel in Athens, prompting authorities to close roads leading to the surrounding mountains until they are cleared of snow and safe for movement, according to the Kathimerini portal.
Winter equipment and snow chains are needed on the old national highway of Elefsina around Kaza in western Attica, while schools, offices and businesses in areas affected by the bad weather are online, the civil protection service said.
Stormy winds in the Aegean Sea this morning prevented ferries from leaving the ports of Athens, Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina.
Some parts of Evia and Viotia faced similar problems brought by the cold winter front called Avgi, and heavy snowfall is especially in Stena and Leontara.
According to the forecast of the National Meteorological Service, low temperatures and snow are expected today in Thessaly, the Sporades islands, the eastern parts of central Greece, Evia and the northern and eastern Peloponnese, as well as at higher altitudes in Crete and the Aegean islands, while for the part next, rain is predicted for some parts of the country.
