The fire at the "Le Constellation" bar in Crans-Montana, Valais, will go down in history as one of Switzerland's greatest tragedies. More than 40 people lost their lives on New Year's Eve and around 115 others were injured, many of them seriously.
The incident is being investigated to shed more light on what caused the tragedy, while there are still no official publications from the authorities regarding the causes of the fire.
It should have been a peaceful and memorable celebration in the luxury resort of Crans-Montana. Hundreds of people from all over the world gathered at the "Le Constellation" bar to celebrate the New Year. The atmosphere was joyful, people were dancing and drinking liters of wine. But somewhere between midnight and 1:30 a.m. (January 1), tragedy struck.
According to eyewitness accounts, one or more fireworks set the ceiling ablaze after midnight. Videos and cellphone photos that emerged after the tragedy support this account.
When did the tragedy happen?
The tragedy occurred at around 1:30 a.m. on January 1 at Le Constellation, a bar in the luxury Alpine resort popular with tourists, with a capacity of up to 400 seats, during New Year's Eve celebrations. At the time of the explosion, more than a hundred customers were present, who were apparently taking part in a party "reserved for persons under 17".
According to the reconstruction of the event, it appears that fireworks placed in champagne bottles (classic pyrotechnic candles also used in cakes) caused the wooden ceiling at the scene to catch fire. Then, according to witnesses, an explosion occurred, possibly due to the presence of other pyrotechnic materials. Apparently, the fire spread very quickly and the exit door was apparently too small to allow a quick evacuation.
Panic did the rest: when the flames erupted, everyone present started to flee, "screaming and running." "The exit door was quite small considering the number of people present. Someone broke a window to get people out," a French woman explained to BFM-TV.
Firefighters and police arrived "within minutes." "The flames were only a meter away from us; if we hadn't run away, we would probably have been injured too," one of them added.
Fear of an attack

Policia u njoftua në orën 1:30 të mëngjesit. Vetëm pak minuta më vonë, ekipet e ndihmës së shpejtë mbërritën në bar. Anëtari I ekipit të ndihmës së shpejtë Léandre, 32 vjeç, nga Crans-Montana e përshkroi skenën si të tmerrshme.
“Isha një nga të parët në vendngjarje. Shumë njerëz shumë të rinj po iknin nga bari. Ne nxorëm ata që ishin ende të vetëdijshëm; ishte kaos i plotë!. Njerëzit po digjeshin të gjallë”, shprehet ai.
Sipas dëshmitarit okular Rayan Guiren, I cili kishte udhëtuar nga Londra drejt Crans Montana, dhjetëra njerëz me fytyra të djegura ishin shtrirë përpara barit.
"Me sa duket ishte një festë posaçërisht për adoleshentë. Shumë prindër erdhën duke kërkuar fëmijët e tyre", tregon ai.
Dëshmitari okular Samuel Rapp rrëfen: "Normalisht, njerëz shumë të rinj midis 16 dhe 18 vjeç qëndrojnë atje. Thuhet se ka vdekur edhe një kamariere që e njihja më parë."

At around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, Federal President Guy Parmelin arrived in Crans-Montana to assess the disaster. Two hours later, he addressed the public at a press conference: "This is one of the worst tragedies in the history of this country." Flags at the Federal Palace were flown at half-mast for five days in response to the fire.
The victims come from all over the world. It has been confirmed that, in addition to Swiss citizens, French and Italians were also among the victims. The youngest known victim is 16 years old. Swiss authorities are working together with their counterparts in Europe.
Authorities were unable to provide any information regarding the causes and those responsible for the January 1 tragedy.
"There are no suspects," said Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud. No one has been arrested. The focus of the investigation is on determining the causes that led to the tragic fire.
