A night of fear and anxiety is predicted between August 12 and 13 for thousands of residents of Achaia, Zakynthos, Preveza and Chios, as the large fires that "broke out" today and have put authorities on high alert are destroying everything.
Firefighters are continuing to wage a titanic "battle" with the flames, while strong winds are making their work difficult.
Over 7,500 people have been ordered to evacuate, abandoning their homes.
In Chios, dozens of people were rescued from the beaches of Limnia and Agia Markella. By 20:00, the fire had "encircled" Volissos, resulting in significant damage to the village.
With the large fire spreading uncontrollably in northwestern Chios and residents receiving a barrage of evacuation messages in many settlements, the Municipality of Chios announced that four municipal structures will remain open throughout the night to receive and shelter residents in need of safety and support.
"Tonight is forecast to be a terrible night," Achaia Regional Councilor Fanis Adamopoulos told Newsbomb. He said two air force planes and two helicopters are operating in the area, as well as strong ground forces. However, the biggest problem remains the strong winds, which, he says, "do not seem to be calming down."
