The well-known Italian journalist, Franco Di Mare, has passed away today. The family announced this through a press release.
" Embraced by the love of his wife, daughter, sisters and brother and by the love of his closest friends, Franco Di Mare passed away today ". Sent for years to the "hottest" areas of the planet, Di Mare had mesothelioma, one of the worst cancers.
He was the one who announced it a year ago. " I have cancer. Today we take care of ourselves and often recover. Not from this one. It doesn't go away, the most you can do is slow it down, but it stays there and it's one of the worst ," he said.
Di Mare identified the cause of mesothelioma after being in the Balkans for a long time, “ among depleted uranium bullets, hyper-fast, hyper-destructive, capable of bringing down a building. Each explosion released endless asbestos particles into the air. One was enough. Six thousand times lighter than a hair. Maybe I met him in Sarajevo, in July 1992, my first mission. Or the last one, in 2000, who knows. I could not know it, but I had breathed death. The incubation period can last up to 30 years. Here we are ."
Among his most dangerous moments, Franco di Mare has often recalled an episode experienced in Albania during the 1997 revolts, which he followed as a special envoy: " I suddenly found myself in an armed conflict between rival gangs and a bullet went over his head. I only escaped by sitting down to get the camera battery in the bag. Laugh really lucky! ", he said.
His journalistic career is very long and full of important passages: he joined Rai in 1991, becoming a special correspondent in 1995; in 2002 he moved to Tg1, where he covered most of the conflicts of the last twenty years - Bosnia, Kosovo, Somalia, Mozambique, Algeria, Albania, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Rwanda, the first and second Gulf wars, Afghanistan, East Timor , the Middle East and Latin America. In 2003 he became a TV presenter at Rai 1, in 2019 he became deputy director of Rai1, in May 2020 he took charge of Rai3, the network in which he landed Che tempo che fa by Fabio Fazio. And Fazio himself was among the first to comment on Di Mare's death: " I knew like everyone else that it would happen soon. But every time something like this happens we are surprised and we are never ready ".
