Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to shut down the Al Jazeera news channel in Israel, his Likud party has announced.

Netanyahu will convene lawmakers today to approve the measure against Qatar's satellite TV station.

If the necessary laws are ratified, Netanyahu "will take immediate action to shut down Al Jazeera in accordance with the procedure set forth in the law," the Likud party said in a statement.

The Netanyahu administration has long opposed the news channel, claiming it broadcasts biased coverage of conflicts involving Israel.
