'Havana Syndrome'/ Russian intelligence shocks the US, secret weapon
Russian military intelligence used secret high-energy weapon on FBI, CIA and US officials, investigative report says

A year-long investigation by 'The Insider' in collaboration with '60 Minutes' and 'Der Spiegel' that accuses the Russian unit GRU 29155 of using microwaves or ultrasound against US government personnel and some of their family members has made headlines today. today in the American media.

A mysterious illness that has afflicted American diplomats in recent years is linked to a Russian intelligence unit.

Personnel stationed around the globe affected by "Havana Syndrome" have reported unexplained symptoms such as dizziness.

They may have been targeted by Russian sonic weapons, according to a joint investigation by The Insider, Der Spiegel and CBS' 60 Minutes. Moscow has denied any involvement and US officials have said it is unlikely that a foreign power is to blame.

But in their assessment of the "abnormal health incidents" - made last year - they offered no alternative explanation. They also acknowledged that there were varying levels of confidence in the assessment among the various intelligence agencies involved. The phenomenon takes its name from Cuba's capital, Havana - where the first case was discovered in 2016 - although the new report suggests the first cases may have occurred in Germany two years ago.

American personnel affected by the condition – including White House, CIA and FBI staff – have complained of dizziness, headaches, difficulty concentrating and an intense, painful ringing in their ears.

It has long been suspected that they were hit by directed energy or microwaves fired from hidden devices – a possibility that was acknowledged in an earlier US intelligence report. The new media investigation claims that operatives from a Russian military intelligence unit – known as 29155 – may have targeted the brains of US diplomats with energy weapons.

As part of the investigation, The Insider – a Russia-focused site – also reported that officers in unit 29155 had been rewarded for their work related to the development of "non-lethal acoustic weapons". A US military investigator examining cases of the syndrome told 60 Minutes that the common link among the victims of the syndrome was a "Russia connection".

Greg Edgreen explained: "There were several angles where they had worked against Russia, focused on Russia, and done extremely well."

He also said the official American bar of evidence to show Russian involvement was set too high, as his country did not want to "face some very hard truths". One victim of the syndrome — an FBI agent — told 60 Minutes about her experience of being struck by a powerful force in her Florida home in 2021.

"Bam, inside my right ear, it was like a dentist drilling steroids," she told the program. "That feeling when you get too close to your eardrum? It's like that, times 10."

The woman - known as Carrie - said she eventually lost focus and later had problems with memory and concentration. Responding to the report, US officials told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that they would "continue to closely scrutinize the anomalous health incidents", but reiterated their position that "it is highly unlikely that a foreign adversary to be responsible". But they said they "did not question the very real experiences and symptoms that our colleagues and their family members have reported", saying their work on such incidents was a priority.

Russia denies involvement

Russia has always denied any involvement. Insider's report states that the first episode of "Havana syndrome" symptoms may have occurred before 2016, because "there may have been attacks two years ago in Frankfurt, Germany, when a US government employee stationed in The consulate was left unconscious, struck by something similar. in a strong beam of energy”.

Evidence for CBS

On 60 Minutes, CBS announces: “We have significant developments in our five-year investigation into mysterious brain injuries reported by US national security officials. The injured include White House staff, CIA officers, FBI agents, military officers and their families. Many believe they have been injured by a secret weapon that emits a high-energy microwave or ultrasound beam. And for the first time we have evidence of who may be responsible. Most of the wounded fought for America, often in secret. And they are frustrated that the US government publicly suspects that an adversary is targeting Americans.
