The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court in Ukraine has set the bail measure for former Energy Minister Hernan Halushchenko, against a guarantee of 200 million hryvnia or about 3.3 million pounds.
Halushchenko is under investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) as part of Operation Midas, a wide-ranging investigation into suspected corruption at the state-owned nuclear power company Energoatom.
According to NABU, the investigation focuses on around $100 million in funds, which are suspected of being laundered by a structured group that includes current and former energy sector officials, government ministers, a former deputy prime minister and a businessman.
Authorities suspect the defendants manipulated contracts at Energoatom to take bribes. According to officials, border guards stopped Halushchenko the day before as he was trying to leave Ukraine by train.
The former minister, who headed the Energy Ministry from 2021 to 2025, has denied any wrongdoing. He has called the charges “manipulated.” Earlier, Halushchenko had said he was willing to pay up to 30 million hryvnia (about £511,000) as bail.
"I am not happy with the bail. I will raise money for lawyers so that they can file an appeal ," he told reporters.
