Removal of barricades begins in Belgrade, students demand release of those

In Serbia, barricades have begun to be removed and traffic normalized, after thousands of anti-government protesters blocked roads in several Serbian cities in the early hours of June 30 and demanded the release of protesters who were detained by police.

The protesters were increasing pressure on Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The protesters, led by students, placed metal barricades and trash cans on the streets of Belgrade and blocked the Gazela Bridge, which spans the Sava River.

News agencies reported that protesters in Novi Sad – where this wave of anti-government protests began eight months ago – surrounded the offices of Vučić's Progressive Party of Serbia (SNS), pelting the building with eggs.

Barricades were erected at 30 points in the Serbian capital, while similar acts were being carried out in at least 22 other Serbian cities.

The protests intensified after police officers began detaining participants in a mass rally held in Belgrade on June 28. Vučić stated that police would arrest more protesters.

The students are demanding early parliamentary elections and the removal of a camp in the city center, which has been set up by other students who oppose the faculty blockade and support President Vučić.

Students have been blocking universities since November 2024, demanding responsibility for the deaths of 16 people in Novi Sad, as a result of the collapse of a concrete shelter at the city's railway station.
