" I will never leave. Look, if I had left, I would have left before the primary race in 2016. It was a tough race. In theory this was not feasible ," Trump said in an interview on board his plane.
Trump is not legally barred from running for president from prison or as a convicted felon. But such an offer would nonetheless place a massive strain on the country's political and legal systems.
The former president lashed out at special prosecutor Jack Smith and argued that the case against him was politically motivated and weak.
He sidestepped the possibility that he would be sentenced, gaining immunity if elected president in 2024.
" I don't think I'll ever have to. I've done nothing wrong, " Trump said.
What role the latest indictment will play in the GOP presidential race is not yet clear, though after the New York indictment, the former president saw a surge in his poll numbers and fundraising support as Republican voters gathered around him.
Trump's campaign is looking to replicate the performance, with his team sending out calls to supporters in hopes of generating small dollar contributions. Throughout the day Saturday, there were signs that Trump's staunchest supporters were unmoved by the news.
At the Georgia state party convention, the crowd was packed with people wearing "Make America Great Again" hats, and some audience members chanted "We love you" as the former president spoke.
But despite what Trump and his team predict, the classified documents issue is widely seen as far more serious than the New York one, and the former president's opponents hope his legal troubles will distract him from the campaign.
