'He didn't like pain, nor did he want to hurt himself,' new

Among Epstein's files are records of his death at New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center, but so far nothing contradicts the verdict that he died by suicide...

Among the tens of thousands of Jeffrey Epstein documents released so far by the Justice Department are documents that provide new details on one of the most controversial aspects of the case, his death in federal custody in 2019.

Epstein, who was indicted in July 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges, had been locked up at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York for five weeks when, on August 10, at approximately 6:30 a.m., he was found dead in his cell.

He had been denied parole and, at age 66, faced a possible sentence of 45 years in prison if convicted on all charges. The day before his death, federal judges in a separate civil lawsuit had unsealed 2,000 pages of records containing allegations of his sexual abuse of young girls and women.

Six days after his death, New York City's chief medical examiner, Barbara Sampson, whose office had performed an autopsy on Epstein's body, concluded that he had hanged himself.

Since then, a wide range of people, including members of Congress and some prominent supporters of President Donald Trump, have challenged this conclusion, claiming without any evidence that Epstein was murdered and offering theories about who might have done it.

The documents released so far offer no support for these theories. They provide additional evidence to the conclusion reached by previous investigations, both by the Justice Department and media organizations, that prison officials failed to properly monitor Epstein despite previously placing him on suicide watch.

Two prison staff members were charged after Epstein's death with neglecting his care. Prosecutors said they slept during part of their shifts, spent time shopping online and falsified check-in records to hide their failure to conduct checks every 30 minutes. They ultimately reached a plea deal to avoid trial. Prison officials also left Epstein alone in his cell, despite strict instructions not to do so.

In the early hours of July 23, 2019, a few weeks after Epstein arrived at the prison, staff found him semi-unconscious on the floor of his cell with a makeshift orange noose around his neck, according to an investigative report from the Federal Bureau of Prisons included in the document set. This previous apparent suicide attempt had been widely reported, but the newly released documents offer new details.

The Bureau of Prisons did not respond to questions about Epstein's imprisonment and death.

After trying to get him to his feet, staff members handcuffed Epstein and carried him outside to a chair, the report said. A medical evaluation revealed bruising and abrasions around his neck. Photos in the report, dated 1:45 a.m. and labeled “possible suicide attempt,” show a disheveled Epstein in a blue suicide vest, his skin slightly red above his collarbone.

A surveillance log from the morning of that apparent suicide attempt was also among the documents the Justice Department released this week. It shows handwritten notes by two staff members, entered at 15-minute intervals.

A note dated 2:15 a.m. says Epstein "states his cellmate tried to kill him." The investigative report also says Epstein told an officer that his cellmate "had tried to kill him and had harassed him."

At the time, Epstein was in a relationship with Nicholas Tartaglione, a former police officer who was later convicted of a quadruple murder and sentenced to life in prison. Tartaglione and Epstein later said they had no problems with each other, according to prison records. Investigators found no significant evidence that Tartaglione assaulted Epstein.

A 2:30 a.m. entry in the suicide watch log read: “prisoner sitting on bed trying to remember what had happened.” Later entries simply read, “prisoner sitting on bed” and “prisoner standing at door.”

Epstein told investigators in an interview on July 31 that he had not slept for “approximately 20 days,” according to the investigative report. He said he was awakened on the floor by the sound of snoring that turned out to be his.

Tartaglione said he had been sleeping on the floor of his cell when he felt something touch his leg, the report states. He woke up to find Epstein snoring with his eyes open and thought he was having a heart attack, according to the report.

Epstein appeared to be recovering quickly from the apparent suicide attempt, according to a Bureau of Prisons medical form completed that morning. A health care provider noted that he was breathing normally, did not appear distressed and smiled during the visit. He declined to discuss what led up to the incident, the document states.

“He also complained about having to go back to the SHU,” the July 27 email read, referring to the special housing unit, which is used for inmates with psychiatric problems and those requiring extra monitoring. The sender added that Epstein was “worried about this and the fact that he couldn’t sleep there because of the noise of inmates banging and screaming at night.”

Another email indicated that “inmate Epstein appears psychologically stable.”

Prison staff sent Epstein back to special housing on July 30.

Over the next few days, Epstein's lawyers wrote to prison officials complaining about his condition. They said he had no toilet paper, that his CPAP machine, used for sleep apnea, had been disconnected and that he was only allowed two 15-minute speakerphone calls with officers present, according to the redacted emails.

On August 10, prison staff delivering breakfast to Epstein found him unconscious in his cell, documents show. /Adapted from WashingtonPost /
