US President Donald Trump, during a speech given before hundreds of US military leaders at the Quantico military base, repeated his well-known claims of personal influence in resolving international conflicts.
He declared: “I’ve solved so many wars since we’ve been here. We’ve been here for almost nine months.” Referring to efforts to bring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table, Trump said that “the only way to do it is through force,” noting that “if we were weak, they wouldn’t even take my call.”
During the speech, Trump stressed his full commitment to the military: “I am with you, I support you, and as President, I will always stand by you 100%. You will never see me waver.” These statements contrast with the harsher tone of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who minutes earlier had called for the resignation of any military personnel who felt disappointed by the elimination of diversity policies at the Pentagon.
Trump reiterated that, despite his successes in mediating international conflicts, he does not expect to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. "Will I get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not. They'll give it to someone who did nothing. Or someone who wrote a book about the brain of Donald Trump and how wars were resolved - and he'll get the Nobel," he quipped to senior officers.
Citing the conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Cambodia and Thailand, India and Pakistan, and Serbia and Kosovo, Trump listed them as examples of his influence in reducing global tensions. However, some foreign leaders, including those in India, have denied that American pressure has been decisive, while others, such as Cambodia, have considered US assistance valuable. Meanwhile, major conflicts, such as the one between Russia and Ukraine, remain unresolved.
Trump also supported the new line of the US military that excludes “political correctness culture”, emphasizing that everything will be based on meritocracy. “Everything is merit. You are all here because of merit. You are not going to be replaced for political reasons, because someone is politically correct and you are not,” he said. “We will take the people who do the best job. That is how this country was built. We were built on merit,” he continued.
Concluding, Trump added that the new focus of the US military will be on physical fitness, character and strength: "The purpose of the US military is not to protect anyone's feelings. It is to protect our republic."
