The missile tests occur during joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States...
North Korea launched about ten ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan on Saturday, March 14, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
Seoul's armed forces announced that they had detected "about ten unidentified ballistic missiles launched from the Sunan region in North Korea towards the East Sea at around 1:20 p.m. local time (05:20 Paris time), AFP writes.
The “East Sea” is the Korean name for the Sea of Japan. The launches came as South Korea and the United States are conducting their annual military exercises, which began on Monday and are expected to last until March 19.
About 18,000 South Korean soldiers and an as-yet-undetermined number of American troops are participating in these maneuvers.
On Tuesday, Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned of "terrible and unimaginable consequences" that she said the joint exercises could cause.
Earlier, South Korea's Defense Ministry announced that North Korea had launched at least one "unidentified projectile" toward the Sea of Japan.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense also confirmed a launch, stating on its official account on Platform X that "a suspected ballistic missile has been launched from North Korea."
Pyongyang has recently dashed hopes for an easing of diplomatic tensions with Seoul, a key US security ally, describing recent peace efforts as a "deceptive and clumsy farce".
The announcement of the concessions came just hours after South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, during a visit to the United States, told the media that US President Donald Trump considers a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "a good thing."
