A total of 31 premature babies have been evacuated from Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza along with six health workers and 10 staff family members, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Tedros said in a post on X that the babies, who are not in good health, were taken to the Emirates Maternity Hospital in Rafah, southern Gaza, where they are receiving emergency care in the neonatal intensive care unit.
" Further missions are being planned to urgently transport the remaining patients and health personnel out of Al-Shifa hospital, pending assurances of safe passage from the parties to the conflict ," he said.
Earlier, an Egyptian government source told CNN that more than two dozen neonatal babies had been evacuated from Al-Shifa.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society said on Sunday that its ambulance crews, working alongside WHO and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), "were able to evacuate 31 premature babies from Al-Shifa hospital".
Israel raided Gaza's largest hospital on Wednesday, where thousands of displaced Palestinians were sheltering along with patients and medical staff.
Doctors still at the hospital are unable to treat patients due to shelling by Israeli forces last week. Due to lack of fuel and lack of electricity the incubators for babies no longer work. Several patients and neonatal babies at Al-Shifa have died in recent days.
Israel claims that Hamas is using the medical center for military purposes and has built a command center under the facility. Both Hamas and hospital officials have repeatedly denied these claims.
CNN has not been able to verify Israel's and Hamas' claims.
