Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said she had told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that she wants to return to Venezuela.
" I have told the secretary of state that I want to return to my country as soon as possible. Of course, there are important meetings and agreements that we are working on abroad. And as soon as I finish working on those issues, I want to return ," Machado told reporters in Washington on Tuesday.
Rubio met with Machado shortly after defending the Trump administration's policy toward Venezuela in a hearing before the U.S. Senate.
Machado left Venezuela in December on a dangerous sea voyage to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. The US special forces veteran who led her extraction has pleaded with her not to return, saying the mission was "the most difficult, high-profile and delicate operation" he had ever carried out.
Recall that last week, Trump said he would like to see Machado "involved" in leading the country in some way. Machado had lunch with Trump at the White House earlier this month, where she presented him with the Nobel Peace Prize.
