Pope Francis will be operated on in the afternoon by surgeon Sergio Alfieri and will remain hospitalized for at least two days.
The Holy See explained that "the Pope will undergo a laparotomy under general anesthesia and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with prostheses".
Alfieri is the same professional who operated on Pope Francis in July two years ago for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon. To date, the surgeon has performed more than 9,000 operations and comes from the direct line and from the school of surgeons under the popes.
Alfieri was in fact a pupil of the surgeon Giovanni Battista Doglietto, who in turn was in the team of Francesco Crucitti, who went down in history as the surgeon of John Paul II after having operated on him three times.
"The operation organized in recent days by the medical team in aid of the Holy Father, became necessary due to an infected incisional hernia that is causing repeated, painful and worsening subocclusive syndromes. The admission to the health institution will last several days to allow normal progress after the operation and full functional recovery", explained the director of the Press Office of the Holy See, Matteo Bruni.
