The Pope watched the film Conclave to know what to expect

Before Pope Leo XIII went to the Vatican for the Conclave session that led to his election as head of the Roman Catholic Church, he saw the film "Conclave" starring Ralph Fiennes, so he knew what to expect, his brother has revealed.

John Prevost described the moment he learned that his younger brother had become Pope.

"I couldn't believe it, because we as a family didn't think it could happen," he told NBC from his home in New Lenox, Illinois.

When asked if Pope Leo had watched the film Conclave for inspiration, John replied "yes."

"So he knew how to behave. It's things like that, because I wanted to let him laugh, to laugh at something, because now it's a big responsibility," John added.

"I'm almost speechless. It's just unbelievable that my brother was elected Pope," said Pope Leo's other brother, Louis Prevost.

Asked how he thought Pope Leo would run the Vatican, John added that he expects him to be a "second Pope Francis."

"It won't be too left and it won't be too right. Somewhere in the middle," he added.

Born in 1955, Pope Leo left home as a teenager to join St. Augustine's Seminary.

His siblings said they only saw him during holidays after that, but they still keep in close contact.

Leo went on to have a long career in missionary work in South America, working for nearly 15 years in Peru until 1998.

In 2015, he was appointed bishop of Chiclayo in northwestern Peru and granted citizenship.

It was his passion for pastoral care that endeared him to the late Francis, who brought Leo to the Vatican in 2023 as head of the office that reviews episcopal candidates, one of the most important duties in the Catholic Church.

The new pope is also an expert in canon law, a system that functions as both the constitution and legal system specific to the Catholic Church, giving him an appeal in the more traditional wings of the Vatican.
